The exhibition "Open for Business" shows commissioned works from six decades by more than 50 photographers of the legendary photo agency Magnum Photos and thus provides an insight into a fascinating and lesser-known part of their portfolio.
For more than 70 years, Magnum photographers around the world have documented historical events as well as stories that take place in obscurity. At the same time, many of them are commissioned by fashion brands, governments, NGOs and industry. While these photographs may not be known to the general public as "Magnum" work, they play an important role in the agency's history. They illustrate once again photography's complex position at the intersection of art, documentation, and commerce.
"Open for Business" takes a critical look at commissioned works from the 1950s to the most recent commissions from 2019, revealing the exciting interactions between commercial and independent production. It shows how photographers* have shaped or changed the visual language of companies and how their own free interpretations have produced creative results that are often surprising, ironic and humorous.
The exhibition was created in cooperation with Magnum Photos Paris, Foam Amsterdam and the "Rencontres de la photographie Arles". It was co-curated by Anne-Marie Beckmann, Deutsche Börse Photography Foundation, and Mirjam Kooiman, Foam Photography Museum Amsterdam.
