VII is excited to partner with Colombia Photo Expeditions to present a workshop with Maggie Steber that explores photography, creativity, nature, storytelling, and the power of one’s own inspiration.
Lead by Maggie Steber and Colombia Photo Expeditions’ Kike Calvo, participants will explore the Feria de Las Flores in Medellin in the Andes mountains, swim in a river that has been dubbed “the liquid rainbow”, listen to the Latin rhythms of the salsa capital of the world, ride motorcycle-powered carts through the luscious rainforest, and visit the beaches and mangroves of one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet in search of Humpback Whales.
VII is a storied photo agency founded a few days before 9/11 to challenge the convergence in the photography business when the trend for giant companies swallowing smaller independent agencies started. VII went small and photographer-owned, believing in the power and energy of collective effort when everyone else seemed to be going big and corporate. VII remains a disruptive and innovative business unafraid to swim against the prevailing currents.
VII has turned its gaze far from the frontline of its foundation. It has earned a reputation for uncompromising photography immersed in the great issues of today. VII photographers and filmmakers are as likely to be found focusing on race, gender, and identity as they are on migration or conflict. Amplifying local voices and addressing the complex political, environmental, and social questions facing families everywhere, VII places great value in the power of images to tell important stories. The members of VII are motivated by issues and are proud to elevate those issues above the cult of the image or the cult of the photographer.
About Maggie Steber
Maggie Steber, a documentary photographer specializing in humanistic stories, has worked in 67 countries. Her honors include a grant from the Guggenheim Foundation in 2017, the Leica Medal of Excellence, World Press Photo Foundation, the Overseas Press Club, Pictures of the Year, the Medal of Honor for Distinguished Service to Journalism from the University of Missouri, the Alicia Patterson Grant, the Ernst Haas Grant, and a Knight Foundation grant for the New American Newspaper project. Steber has worked in Haiti for three decades. Aperture published her monograph, “Dancing on Fire.”
In 2013, Steber was named as one of eleven Women of Vision by National Geographic Magazine with an exhibition that traveled to five cities. Steber served as a Newsweek contract photographer and as Asst. Managing Editor of Photography and Features at The Miami Herald, overseeing projects that won a Pulitzer. At the 17th Annual Lucie Awards, Emeritus Member Maggie Steber was honored with a Lucie Award for her achievement in photojournalism. Her work is included in the Library of Congress, the Guggenheim Foundation Collection, and The Richter Library. She exhibits internationally. Clients include National Geographic Magazine, The New York Times Magazine, Smithsonian Magazine, AARP, The Guardian, and Geo Magazine. Steber teaches workshops internationally including at the World Press Joop Swart Master Classes, the International Center for Photography, Foundry Workshops, and the Obscura Photo Festival.
