The 20-part image series Fear by Soham Gupta, acquired in 2019, will now be exhibited for the first time. Gupta's nocturnal encounters with his protagonists reveal a world both real and surreal. In the glare of the camera's flash and against the darkened backdrop of his home city of Kolkata, a narrative emerges that is as poetic as it is political, and which can be read as document and fiction depending on interpretation and perspective.
In summer 2020, the Museum Folkwang reopened its basement as a permanent exhibition space for photography. In changing exhibitions, new acquisitions enter into an active and multi-layered dialogue with works and groups of works from the holdings of the Photographic Collection.
