Femme Fatale by David Drebin

"In a unique manner, David Drebin's work combines voyeuristic and psychological viewpoints. He offers the viewer a dramatic insight into emotions and experiences which many of us have doubtlessly felt at some point of our lives."

Longings and Desires excited by Images

by Rainer Funke

Hardly anything is more electrifying than the deep or not so deep layers of our longings and desires excited by images, especially when they come along in the garb of mythical atmospheres and set in motion premonitions. Contemporary myths reach us mainly in the form of films.

David Drebin's photographs manage in an inimitable way to create tense, crackling, highly erotic film atmospheres with individual images. We cannot see the films from which the frozen scenes seem to originate, but we feel exactly how they feel, how they tickle and challenge us, breathlessly in the vortex of their exuberant actions, intoxicating us orgiastically.

Each photograph is an explosion of potentiated sensuality, color frenzy, a voyeuristic realization of a particular U-Topos with a special, mysterious happening. Against the background current discussions about diversity, someone may find Drebin's shameless staging of female eroticism from the point of view of the heterosexual male gaze, which, however, can just as well be a (less heterosexual) female gaze, as a spectacle of masculine dominance. Because of the presented perfection, we should not let ourselves be stopped by this!

"After graduating from Parsons School of Design in New York City in 1996, David Drebin rapidly made a name for himself as an internationally renowned photographer creating images of movie stars, sports personalities and various entertainers and subsequently was commissioned for countless high profile advertising campaigns around the world. David Drebin is a multidisciplinary artist working in various art forms producing limited edition works including Photographs, Lightboxes, Neon light Installations, Sculptures and Etchings on Glass."

"Drebin's photographs are epic, dramatic and, above all, cinematic and have been collected around the world. In a unique and opulent way, Drebin stages femme fatales against the gigantic backdrops of cities such as Hong Kong, New York, and Paris. The panorama of the big cities, which, due to their format, are a tribute to cinema, serve as cinematic settings. With their impressive skyscrapers, they provide the viewer with a nearly infinite surface for the imagination. The distinctive tension and depth in his pictures arise from the free combination of such differing topics as humor and sex, melancholy and sex, and melancholy and humour. At Art Miami in 2010, his now sold out “Central Park” sold for a record price of $78,000 through Contessa Gallery who has featured Drebin in major Art Fairs since 2008 alongside art world legends Andy Warhol, Chuck Close and Helmut Newton."

"The dreamy, epic and cinematic photographic world of David Drebin is portrayed with sex appeal, intrigue, fantasy and danger. The viewer has stumbled upon a moment, caught at the height of the action. His highly recognizable cinematic style has made Drebin one of the most desirable and collected multi-disciplinary artists worldwide. At first sight, David Drebin’s images of Femme Fatales are captivating. Over time the viewer discovers layers - hints of humour, melancholy and hidden drama."

Feminism has tried to dismiss the femme fatale as a misogynist libel, a hoary cliche. But the femme fatale expresses woman's ancient and eternal control of the sexual realm. The specter of the femme fatale stalks all of men's relationships with women. ~ Camille Paglia
