Olesya Dzhurayeva: Wandering into the moment

On the occasion of the opening of its new Berlin gallery location, ArtEast Gallery Berlin-Kyiv presents the solo exhibition "Wandering into the moment" by the multiple award-winning graphic artist Olesya Dzhurayeva. Olesya transforms the city into a place of inner retreat and reflection. The artist's intentionlessness of the walk, which has gained a central place in Pandemic, sounds like an invitation to us to reduce our pace and engage in a slower walk in order to grasp what is essential from life.

Olesya Dzhurayeva: Springday in Berlin, 2020, linocut, 50,5 x 77,5 cm

Olesya Dzhurayeva, born in 1982 in Dushanbe and raised in Kiev, completed her diploma studies in graphic arts in 2006 in Kiev. In 2019, she was awarded the "Prix Félix Bracquemond" at the Société Nationale des Beaux-Arts art fair in Paris, among other prizes. She lives in Kiev.

Olesya Dzhurayeva: Nordic light. Stockholm. 2020, linocut, 50,5 x 77,5 cm

Olesya Dzhurayeva, who describes herself as an insatiable observer of city life, invites us on a graphic walk through the city, a journey through everyday moments and rituals of life that we are not usually aware of. She gives us the freedom to look at them and interpret them ourselves. Observing the city becomes an aesthetic experience in which every flâneur becomes a narrator.

Olesya Dzhurayeva: The Scream, 2021, linocut, 50,5 x 77,5 cm

In this way, Olesya transforms the city into a place of inner retreat and reflection. The artist's intentionlessness of the walk, which has gained a central place in Pandemic, sounds like an invitation to us to reduce our pace and engage in a slower walk in order to grasp what is essential from life. Olesya thus gives meaning to Franz Hessel's saying in his novel Secret Berlin: "Life is everywhere for you, free at any time of day, just don't get involved, enjoy everything, own nothing."

About ArtEast Gallery

ArtEast Gallery, founded in 2021 by Cornélia Schmidmayr and Ivanna Bertrand, specialises in contemporary Ukrainian art. ArtEast Gallery aims to introduce Western European art lovers to the artistic diversity and creativity of Ukraine and to help the Ukrainian art scene find a better place in Europe. In addition to exhibiting contemporary artists, ArtEast Gallery offers trips to Ukraine and organises artists-in-residence residencies. In 2022, there will be such a programme in Brittany in France and in Kiev.

Cornélia Schmidmayr is the managing director of ArtEast Gallery. A political scientist who also studied European law and Chinese in Paris, she is French with German roots, lived in Kiev from 2014 to 2018 and then served as cultural attachée of the French Embassy in Vienna.

In 2014, in Maidan-ridden Kiev, she simultaneously met Ivanna Bertrand and Ukraine's dynamic and incredibly innovative art scene - a revelation. Ivanna Bertrand, ArtEast Gallery's artistic director, is Ukrainian and French and studied philosophy at the Shevchenko University in Kiev. Cornélia Schmidmayr and Ivanna Bertrand have brought together Ukrainian artists and art lovers in several projects in Kiev. Ivanna Bertrand is also co-directing the Photo Kyiv fair, held annually since 2017. The gallery is represented in Kiev and has since September 2021 a location in Berlin. It enriches the artistic offerings of the German capital with an ever-renewing creativity - and is thus on par with the expectations of the Berlin public.
