Dimension conversation by Gigi Chung

Gigi Chung

Inspired by Deconstructivism in architecture, Gigi Chung’s works explore the geometric juxtaposition of various building edifices. These surfaces contain unifying patterns and elements which create pulsating visual rhythms, facilitate eye movements within the image.

Depart from existing reality, these monochromatic architectural abstracts create fragmented and asymmetric compositions independent of time and space. The intricate studies of lines and forms invite viewers to experience the unique spatial relationship of a built environment.

“Geometry has two great treasures; one is the Theorem of Pythagoras; the other, the division of a line into extreme and mean ratio. The first we may compare to a measure of gold; the second we may name a precious jewel.” ― Johannes Kepler

Chung is a San Francisco-based fine-art photographer mainly working in medium-format digital photography. She focuses on architectural abstracts with a minimalistic approach. While drawing her inspirations from her love of music, art, and dance, she finds the juxtaposition of light, shadows, and lines in architecture fascinating.

Her artwork has been exhibited in multiple galleries and museums in Athens, Chania, Cormons, Glasgow, Greenville, Portland, Minneapolis, Taipei, Trieste, Tokyo, San Francisco and Vermont. Some of her recent accolades include being selected as Architecture Series Winner in the 14th Julia Margaret Cameron Awards, Golden Design Award, Top 50 Designers And The Most Popular Design in Photography and Photo Manipulation Category in Novum Design Awards. Her solo exhibition “Emergence” debuted at Hasselblad Japan Tokyo Store Gallery in February 2019.

She is currently working on her Kyotographie KG Plus curated solo exhibition at Gallery Tajiro Gion Kyoto in September 2020.
