Naraphat Sakarthornsap lives and works in Bangkok. As a member of LGBTQ+, in many of his works, he wants to present the stories of inequality in society through photography and installation art based on his true story, where flowers play the leading roles. They become his main object because it was the first thing he fell in love with when he was a child.
Many kinds of flowers that he uses usually come with profound meanings. Those flowers have become the keys to finding the answers neatly hidden in the art. And sometimes, the photographs of these delicate flowers of his works may come from the deepest part of his devastated heart. His early works presented the challenge against nature in an attempt to prolong the freshness of the flower before he developed the ideas to become the challenge against power and influence in the society through the pictures of these flowers.
Therefore, do not believe in what the flowers in front of you appear to be. Look for the messages these flowers are hiding. "Perhaps, what I was facing and trying to present is the same as the ones many others are inevitably struggling with. Over the standards in the society, where inequalities are all around them."
Gushing out my confession
“The day I confided in someone about my sexuality, I got my feelings hurt. They took my story and spread it around for fun. This tainted my identity to the world because it became gossip. As I was looking for ways to heal myself from the hurt and disappointment, I decided to turn to my childhood friends, my old teachers and even strangers that I had never met before. Bringing these people into my safe space, I used photography as my communication tool. During our shoots, we would exchange life stories and, without judgement, we ‘conversed’ through my lens. This interaction was so therapeutic that during the one year the project took to complete, I finally felt like myself again. This series of ‘nude’ photos is therefore also about me. By exposing my models, I feel that I fully ‘exposed’ myself. The difference is that they were willingly ‘naked’ for me and through mutual trust, I bared my soul.”
Ignorant Bond
Have you ever forgotten about the importance of the everyday objects around you? Simply because they are always around you? All the old and broken household objects? “By placing flower arrangements on these items, I am bridging myself to them again for a renewed relationship. When we get busy with our lives and all the responsibility that comes with adult life, we often forget about the value of the objects that physically surround us. Worse, we forget the people in our lives who have always been there. In the end, what gets left behind can very well end up being your own self. So I reconnected with myself through the art of flower arrangement, interacting with the mundane objects found around my own home.”
