Talking to

Stefan Zimmermann

Please introduce yourself

My name is Stefan Zimmermann. I am 54 years old and my origin is a village north of Lake Constance in southern Germany.

Where do you live, does your place of residence inspire you to take pictures?

In 2002 I settled in the Rhine-Main area for professional reasons. Since 2017 i live in Eppstein, a city between Frankfurt and Wiesbaden. The proximity to Frankfurt, Mainz and Wiesbaden offers excellent opportunities, especially in the field of architectural photography. In the broadest sense of the word, I process the subject of “high-rise” as “Tower of Babel” in my photo series.

Do you have a photographic background?

By studying architecture, I deepened and further developed my previous photographic skills and then continued to use them as a basis. Professionally, I also offer architectural photography as a service.

How comes that you are interested in photography?

Originally I come from the field of classical music and have been playing the piano and church organ since childhood. I received a strong, or rather fascinating inspiration in the field of photography in my childhood from my uncle, who was a passionate “picture collector”.

Which photographer has inspired your photography?

In the area of image-composition and the quasi “instantaneous” approach, I've always been very impressed by Henri Cartier-Bresson. Later on, in the area of color, there was mainly Ernst Haas on that.

Why do you work in black and white / color?

At first I was primarily interested in color photography. In the meantime, however, I also apply topics such as color compositions, structures and the procedure in photo series in the field of infrared photography from pure black and white to color.

How do you prepare for a photo? What is your technique and the creation process?

Photos or even photo series I create by using 2 different approaches. On the one hand, spontaneously on walks, depending on where I am "equipped looking around". At home I reflect on the connections between the photos and design the photo series on the PC. Long-term photo projects I approach differently: once an idea for a new photo project has arisen, I return to the previously discovered places and use a technique and approach carefully planned at home, appropriate to the respective topic.

The subject of "completed" photo series means that each series should be viewed and developed as an individual unique and therefore the form, content and technology can be varied and developed further. In addition to infrared photography, photo collages are currently the second major focus.

Which projects would you like to tackle?

Above all, I will continue my photo series project on www.artinoah.de started in 2005. In addition, I am always open to projects in which my focus “The human being in his cultural and historical environment” plays a role in the broadest sense.

What do you do in your life besides photography?

I have a great deal of interest in culture, from photography, music, art, literature to philosophy, psychology and also travel. I am sure that to deal with it in my free time will never really end.

Thanks a lot Stefan Zimmermann for the Interview
