Corona Heroes by Martin Schitto

In adversity emerge heroes. That’s what they say. And they say in this crisis, the heroes are front-line workers. But they have been there all the time for us. And they’ll always be. Only just now most of us really recognize and appreciate their heroic acts. They and what they do every day need to be more visible. Heroes need a face, be it under a mask or not.

When Covid19 hit Germany and the lockdown kept us all sitting at home waiting for the curve to flatten, Martin Schitto decided to do more than clapping hands and donating pizza for the people working in the health system.

He decided to go to a hospital to photograph a report of the doctors and nurses at the end of a day’s shift. #CoronaHeroes was shot on the covid19 ward of “Klinikum Aschaffenburg Alzenau” in late April 2020.

At the beginning of the Covid19 pandemic, Martin Schitto documented the situation of hospital staff: working in full protective gear, some of which was put together by the staff themselves (note the filter masks!). The photographs were taken in April 2020 at the end of an early morning shift at the Covid ward of the Aschaffenburg Alzenau Hospital.

The installation was one of the most photographed works at the Discovery Art Fair Frankfurt 2021.

Martin Schitto is a graphic designer, art director and photographer from Frankfurt, Germany. He holds a degree in visual communication from the University of Applied Sciences, Mannheim and got his hands-on experience in filmmaking at nyfa in New York City.

Schitto used to work as a creative director in advertising. His career started in international network agencies like Saatchi & Saatchi, Lintas and Mccann’s. In 1999 he set up his agency “ssw” in Frankfurt. He had photoproductions with some masters of photography for his advertising clients. A highlight of his career was the photo shooting with Helmut Newton in Monte-Carlo for the poster of the Doris Dörrie film „Me and Him“. Since advertising is not all there is to life, he decided to leave the advertising world end of 2019.

Today he focuses on portrait photography. Before corona made the world stand still, he was occupied with his projects #Kleinmarkthalle.ffm (a local indoormarket he observed for more than two years with his camera) and #ChooseYourColor (portraits of people in their favourite color).
